Automatic gearbox judder

Hi, hope someone can point me in the right direction, I have a 2015 1.4 Corsa with a 6 speed automatic gearbox.
When carrying out slow speed manoeuvres in either drive or reverse with the brake pedal partially applied to keep the speed low, the car sometimes judders violently almost as if it is going to stall.
If the car is brought to a complete halt or if the brake pedal is released the the juddering stops........ the coil pack was replaced in March along with the spark plugs (there are no other juddering problems when driving normally).
Any ideas?

Hi steveieH

Not had this problem with my Corsa e Auto and there is not a lot of information available as to owners experiences on this Forum.
Hopefully its not a problem with the 6GT30 HM9 gear box.

How many miles has the vehicle done ?

A few people with automatics on this forum have noticed this. It's only happened half a dozen times or so in the 18 months I've had my car, either when I've slowed down at a roundabout or when I've been manoeuvring in a car park. It's only been for a few seconds at a time and stops when I take my foot off the brake pedal. If it was the coil pack I would have thought it would happen a lot more consistently.

I'm going to mention it at the next service in four months time but, based on other people's experiences on this forum, I haven't been unduly worried about it.

I have also looked through comments on here and the Astra J Forum which had a similar Auto Gear Box and general opinion is
that it is quite solid & reliable. However we always have to be aware of the unknown, hopefully its just a minor symptom you are noticing
and nothing to worry about.

Would be interested in what is found by your Service Centre so please keep us advised.

We will see then.
At the last service in March I enquired if the replacement of the transmission fluid was part of the main service. I was told by the main dealer that the gearbox on this model was 'sealed for life' and didn't need to be replaced. I found this strange as Honda stipulate that this should be carried out every 2 years on their Jazz models......thoughts?

I also thought of Gear Box Oil Change ? and reason I asked mileage - but like you stated this model has life Time Oil Life ? But sure I read somewhere that recommend drain, flush & refill 100k as oil does deteriorate over time & could cause mechanical issues.

The drain, flush & refill is quite complicated but if interested there are You Tube videos of how this is done with Cruze Chevrolet models that had the earlier problem boxes. The one we have has all old problems solved by redesign so has been much more reliable. Happy Days

Further to my earlier comments I have found the following info from the (Astra J - Automatic ) which may help.

Astra J Automatic - Comments

I have a slight annoyance with the auto. It has what GM call "Neutral Idle". This means it automatically shifts into neutral when the vehicle comes to a stop and the brake pedal is depressed. It shifts back to drive as the brake pedal is released. Now when in stop/start traffic this can occur several times. The problem is that when you release the brakes you get a slight kangaroo effect as the auto takes up the drive.

Certaintly not got this "neutral idle" on my 60 plate auto ?.

It's in the brochure:- "The driver also benefits from a 'neutral' gear disengagement at idle." and the manual "The automatic neutral shift function automatically shifts to idling when the vehicle is stopped with a forward gear engaged and the brake pedal is pressed".

It's not very noticeable every time, a kangaroo start is much too harsh a word to use. It's as if the front wheels rise, ever so gently, over a small 2-3 inch hurdle on release of the brakes. Especially if you are just releasing the brakes (no accelerator) to edge forward several feet. Not a complaint just an observation. Apparently it saves on fuel.

Neutral Idle is active all the time. It removes drive from the wheels when stopped with the gearbox in "D" and your foot on the footbrake. It does not completely put the auto box in to neutral, but does enough to stop any forward drive. I have the technical description of what it does (in the gearbox), but that would be too boring.

One more comment which could be useful?

Hi, dont know if anyone else has one of these and has had the same problem, but sometimes, usually when going very slowly and it is changing from 1st to 2nd, there is a very severe "jerk", (no not me) as it changes. I know the old Vectra Auto had a similar problem years ago and the solution was to remove some oil from the Gearbox, dont know if this is the same, just thought I would ask before I go to VX after the holiday weekend

Just back from the dealers and they were very helpful (Twells of Billinghay), they had the car for over 2 hours and checked oil level etc and then reloaded and reset the gearbox software, just driven home (about 10 Miles) and it feels like a different car, what an improvement, I am very pleased and just hope it continues to run this way.

Mine went in for a service last week and it has the same issue as mention on here. On inspection by the mechanic the coil pack was found corroded, which was causing a misfire, and therefore the juddering. Quite poor since the car had only done just over 25,000 miles at the time. So far it seems to be much better. I thought i'd let others know just encase it can help anyone else.

Hi, mine suffers with the same problem but only when it's in drive. It's like it's confused and can't decide whether it's stopping or going? The way I get round the problem is Bypass D & select 'M1'

Hope it helps
It might be one of the springs isn't properly aligned, I found that after 3,000 miles from the coilpack change. Straightened it and gently put it in. Problem solved.

I've had this. I've found that when you sit in traffic, for instance, with your foot on the break the automatic pull will disengage until the break pedal is depressed. (To save wear and rear, I suppose) I think having the brake slightly pressed while rolling along confuses the computer that can't decide what to do. I found adjusting my driving style slightly worked wonders.
