This may be completely normal but want to check just in case. When accelerating in 4th gear and sometimes 3rd the engine makes a whining noise that gets higher the faster I go. Could it be the turbo spooling up? I can only liken it to the noise my little old Mini used to make.

Ive never had a turbo but that sounds like the normal fuel injector whine which I quite like.

if you mean the 1960 type mini that was the final drive gear from crankshaft to gearbox as I remember.

It's there all the time when accelerating even slightly. She also doesn't feel very fast but that could be me having got used to her. Nearing our first thousand miles now!

I don't get a whining noise? I get a deeper throatier roar under hard acceleration but no whine or certainly not one that is very noticeable. Whine is normally a sign of knackered bearings or lack of lubrication.

Mind you we may have different ideas of what a whine is - my old Land Rovers overdrive gearbox whines like hell at 50mph+ but then it has done 250K miles and is at deaths door ;-)

Hmm. She's going in on 31st to see why the ESC light has come on several times and to see if they can fix the annoying buzz/vibrating noise at low speed. Will mention the whining noise too. It actually sounds like the washing machine does when it starts a spin cycle!

That would be the closest a description to a turbo as you could get...

Never had this on any of my turbo cars, diesel or petrol? Maybe I'm just deaf or not specifically listening for it?

Only cars I've heard it on are proper sports cars with big old turbos and cone filters or an old Escort RS turbo that had knackered turbo. ;-)

Turbo on Corsa 1.4T is tiny and as the turbo shaft floats on pressurised oil and with modern designs of blades they run almost silent. Mine does anyway :)

Cmon! Didn't mean literally same sound, obviously the washing machine is much louder...but close in pitch. Most turbo vehicles I've driven do whistle, some more than others, but never driven one where you can't tell bec you cant hear it, even in standard form. Case in point would be the Renault 1.5dci turbo which is very noisy when compared to say a VX 1.7dti, but you can still hear it on the VX.
LeachiE is saying that the noise comes while accelerating, so if it's not so loud as the washing machine but same pitch it may be just normal.

Chris,

I wasn't talking about the washing machine reference specifically. I was talking about any whine in general. If you have a whine it implies a faulty bearing? Normally a whine refers to a high pitched metal on metal sound? While a healthy turbo may produce a whistle as it compresses the air, especially cold air, and especially in conjunction with a free Flow filter, I would not call it a whine and my 1.4T doesn't make any such noise anyway.

I have referred to the high pitched whistling from the free flow filter fitted to the vac butterfly housing on my wife's LR as a 'whine' simply because it gives me a headache. It is a more accurately a whistle though caused by air rushing through the larger metal frames holes in the cone. Is this the sort of sound you are referring to?

Most of my turbo cars have been larger capacity 2.5-4.0 litres and almost all of those (20+ turbo cars) have been bought brand new. Maybe I'm just used to the sound so don't even notice it. My 1.4T is very quiet so if there was a whine I would have thought I'd notice it especially with ears attuned to listening for failed bearings on classic cars! ;-)

Oh and for reference our Bosch washing machine doesn't whine either

BTW I'm not being awkward, genuinely curious as to what it is. If Leachie has a noticeable whine but my 1.4T doesn't then one of them is not right!?

I get your point regarding whine and whistle, what LeachiE mentioned was the washing machine on start of spin cycle, our Whirlpool does a whine/whistle sound similar to a turbo spooling up (sort of :D ) That's why I'm saying it might be normal operation, but if it a loud whistle then for sure it's not normal. I can just about hear mine with windows down, or when pulling out of a narrow alley with high walls on each side. So yes you have to have a good ear to hear the whistle on a standard car

Ah, whirlpool, explains a lot! ;-) ;-)

In that case it probably is a metal on metal whine as our whirlpool lasted just 2 years...

( It replaced a Zanusi that had lasted 15 years. We replaced whirlpool with a rather expensive Bosch and 6 years later still running well, almost silent compared with whirlpool, used twice a day too, 3 daughters seem to produce more washing than a whole rugby team!)

LOL

I think the washing machine life is inversely proportional to the number of daughters you have......

Zanussi 15 years was pre-kids
Whirlpool 2 years was with 3 daughters
Bosch so far 6 years is after eldest had left home

I think it's just the turbo as it starts at around 1800rpm in 4th. I will ask at the garage why it's so noisy but it may just be my ears being more sensitive to the sound.

This buzz/vibrating noise where does it come from because I'm getting it around the drivers door area

Not entirely sure, but to me it sounds like the passenger side of the centre console down in the footwell, but a passenger thinks it's coming from somewhere else, lol!
