How much is car insurance affected by modifications? Found this info online! Sticky?

Below is a list of common car modifications and the average increase/decrease in premium price due to each modification as an average of mainstream insurers rates.
This is for changes to factory spec, cars with these features as factory spec usually don't affect premiums.
There are insurers specialising in modified cars.
Not informing insurers of mods, even if the previous owner made them, makes insurance null and void.

Transmission/Gear change 45% increase
Exhaust changes 3% increase
Wheel arches 41% increase
Complete body kit 26% increase
Spoilers 7% increase

Replacement of steering wheel 16% increase
Dashboard changes 3% increase
Uprated brakes 15% increase

I own a heavily modified 1960 Land Rover insured through Adrian Flux.

Has following mods which have all been declared to insurance.

Completely stripped and rebuilt on a new chassis
120hp modern turbo intercooled engine fitted in lieu of original 62hp normally aspirated engine.
Brake pedal, servo and master cylinder from a new defender.
Long wheel base 11" drums fitted (soon to be vented disks) in lieu of original 10" drums.
Different gearbox.
Lifted non standard suspension.
Non standard diffs.
Huge 33" mud tyres on non standard wheels.
Bulkhead, heater, dash and windscreen from later model.
Different steering box.
Modified stub axles with defender wheel bearings.
Modern defender seats.
Different radiator.
Oil cooler.
Modern North American Specification side and brake lights.
Halogen headlamps in lieu of original sealed beams.
Body changed to truck cab pickup instead of original factory van body.
Alpine stereo and infinity speakers in lieu of nothing as original.
Custom painted bodywork with flag painted on bonnet.
Custom made interior panels.
Aftermarket alloy door tops.
Custom 2.5" stainless exhaust.

It costs just £200 a year to insure, agreed value of 10K and unlimited mileage for me and my wife. The joys of being an old git :mrgreen:

i guess that's real specialist stuff. You presumably cant easily call Direct Line with that.
Danger is someone buying a new Corsa, insuring it with a mainstream company, reading the forum, legally putting on a nicer sounding exhaust and tinting windows to legal limits, but unless declared they become uninsured.

When I had my Corsa D I change the front indicator bulbs to silvatec ones and added stainless steel grille covers and when I phoned the insujrance broker to let them know I had to explain what silvatecs were! :lol:

Yes true.

Agreed that many people do mods and don't declare them and don't realise the consequences until they have an accident. In some cases there are grave consequences and in one case I know if it resuted in prison. While it won't really apply to changing light bulbs, it gets really serious when you start messing with brakes or suspension. I see loads of VW's around by us with stupidly lowered cars with the rear tyres sat at ridiculous angles. I could easily see those resulting in the law coming down like a ton of bricks on them if they were involved in a fatal crash that could be attributed to lack of grip from the rear end or poor handling due to changed suspension geometry.

I declare everything, even changing from summer to winter tyres even though it actually makes my car safer! Usually doesn't cost anything as I always specify both sets of tyres when insuring the car and just ring them up to let them know which set I'm running on at any point in time.

Yea for most part it results in parts not being covered if they're damaged in an accident - and in some instances the insurer can void it anyway!

I don't have a Defender, they have boingy suspension and power steering and are for girls. :mrgreen:

All my Land Rovers are leaf sprung, known as 'Series'. Hard core - no power steering, sliding windows, virtually no heating etc, only suitable for masochists!

The defenders come in useful for parts as most modern defender parts fit onto our 50 year old Series.

Do you have to declare new bulbs for your front lights and reg lights? I've fitted some brighter bulbs and I dunno if that counts as light changes as people must change bulbs all the time when they break?

Unless you have fitted stupidly bright, high power non E marked bulbs in which case they are not road legal and your insurance won't cover them anyway ;)

I got them from a link on here, they're not that bright though? Any chance you know if these are legal or not?

It's purely statistics. the vehicles with this kind of mod statistically have more accidents according to their records going back years.

Plus a steering wheel is no longer just a round thing with a boss and nut. (Unless its a Land Rover of course.)

The sidelights produce a white light.

They are E marked.

Yes but I was talking about the blue 501s in the advert. I have seen many cars with really blue sidelights and they are illegal, ditto under car blue lights, blue lights on screen washer jets whatever. Blue is for emergency services, period.

I often wish my car had flashing blue lights - they would look cool with the white paint, lol! :D
