Some checks:

1. Do check/confirm that you have installed Android Auto App on the phone
2. Did you use the phone's original USB cable to connect ? if not, do try.
3. If the original cable didn't work, can you connect the phone to a computer/laptop for data transfer ? If not, then cable may be damaged
