Managed to fix it was quite a struggle. The thing that happened was the metal rod which fits in and locks the seat in place had detached from the mechanism.
Took a while to put the spring back on the rod and now it all works fine.
Just incase anyone else got this problem

Hi did you do it ? I reckon this must be the same case as mine. One of the sides in my back seat stuck in and I unscrewed the metal bracket but still cannot pull it out of the seat socket.

Hi just seen your message, don't use this site often unless I come into a problem. The way I folded my seats down was I opened the plastic side storages things in the boot the one which felt locked. After removing the plastic cover you see a metal lock fixing screwed onto the body of the car with 2 star screws. You have to open them and then the seat folds forward with the metal lock still in place. After this you have to try perge the metal out of the lock.

I did exactly what you advised but the metal bracket won't come off. Somebody suggested, the only way to get an access to the mechanism is to take off the upholstery. Do not have a clue how to do it without damaging it. Any clue how to fix it ? Thanks - Robert
