Limp Home Mode

Post by elsid » Thu Nov 22, 2018 11:14 am

My 2015 Corsa E will occasionally send itself into 'limp home mode'. This seems to happen when it has not fully warmed up and almost stalls due to not having enough revs, usually just after moving off or if the revs drop unexpectedly low when changing gear. Obviously creates problems in traffic and at junctions. Turning off the engine for a couple of minutes with the ignition key removed, then restarting restores the car back to normal. I've had the car almost 2 years and it only started to do this back in late September 2018, just a couple of weeks after the warranty expired.

Happened again today when I almost but not quite stalled the engine. Had to pull over for a couple minutes with the engine off to wait for the all the electrical cirtcuits to shut down. Re-started and the problem had gone.

I had something similar with a car a good few years ago and it was put down to dirt in the fuel lines they apparently cleaned them and it sorted the problem.

Mine would stall if you put your foot on the clutch and off the accelerator but only when you were coming down the gears.

Have it checked for OBD error codes

And again this morning. However, this time I only waited for about 10 seconds with the ignition key remove. Then with the ignition light still showing I re-started the engine and full power was back to normal. So on this occasion I did not have to wait for 2 minutes.

I would recommend getting even a basic ODBII code reader that you can plugin and see the code as it happens. Then if you take it to a dealer or other garage you can give them the code as it maybe something that they may struggle to reproduce, with out a lot of labour time

Get the code read.

Could be accelerator sensor has failed

I used a simple OBD2 Bluetooth Car Scanner ELM327 connected to Torque Lite app on my Android phone. It found a single fault code P2138 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch D/E Voltage Correlation. Looks like I may need a new throttle sensor.

I had this happen to me last year, take it to Vauxhall. My accelerator was broken they said, not sure in what way, but they kept the car for a week (gave me a loan car) and fixed it under warranty (assuming you have warranty of course), no issues since then!
