Fuel consumption

Post by ojt1998 » Sun Apr 14, 2019 9:20 pm

Hi all,

Just curious as to how many miles I should expect from my petrol 1.4? At the moment I seem to be getting like a maximum of 250 to a full tank. Is this normal or should I get it looked at?

I’ve had 2 corsa c’s and 1 corsa d and they were all far better than this.

Kind regards,
Oliver

1.4n/a auto, getting around 38/39mpg, mainly short runs.

How are you driving it? Ragging it everywhere and short journeys?
250 to a tank is pretty poor, it's gotta be less than 30MPG that from a quick work out!

From my 1.4T which is remapped, so isn't as good as from the factory. I regularly see about 320-340 miles before needing to needing to fill up and that isn't from empty, usually when the light comes on I put more in.

On a long run I can get 450miles to a tank (recently got that goin down to Santa Pod and back from up near Manchester plus driving about down there).

Get it looked at. What is the service history like? Could also try running some injector cleaner through it, could also be a poorly O2 sensor in the exhaust, though if it was bad it would usually bring a check engine light on.

I have exactly the same range with my 1.4 auto (so 28-30mpg)... but I also mostly drive short trips with a cold engine... It gets slightly better if I drive on the motorway (around 32mpg)... I was wondering the same...

How do you get such a good fuel consumption although you do short runs? Are those short runs back to back (always keeping the engine warm?)

I’ve tried everything to increase the efficiency - kept revs below 2k as much as possible, tried using cruise control and the speed limiter, drive with the blowers off. Just about everything but nothing seems to improve.

I bought the car in December it has done 9500 miles on a 17 plate and all the service history seemed fine. Normally I get about 65 miles from the first bar of fuel but filled up Monday and after 45 miles I’ve already lost the first bar. One of my colleagues thinks it could maybe be a slow fuel leak or a problem with the injectors (I know virtually nothing about car mechanics though) I tried using the STP injector cleaning probably February time but didn’t notice any change. I used to drive a Honda HR-v and the STP stuff worked wonders so was hoping it would again.

I’ll give the garage a call seen as I have a years warranty and see what they suggest.

Thank you all for your replies :)

I have found using cruise on long journeys increases fuel consumption

Each bar on the fuel gauge roughly equates to 40mpg

Guys, what's your average speed?

I found out that when I mostly drive my 1.4 through the city with jams, I get around 9l/100km ~ 31 mpg with the average speed of around 15 km/h ~ 9.3 mph

If I am able to reach higher average speed - fuel consumption gets a lot better, the correlation is roughly like this:
20 mph - 40 mpg
40 mph - 50 mpg
etc
