Can I switch dealerships during warranty?

Post by 1.4autoenergy » Tue Jan 08, 2019 5:22 pm

I'm very dissatisfied with my VX dealership and would like to try out another one which is a couple of miles further away from home - would my VX warranty still apply there or is the dealership I bought the (used) Corsa from responsible for warranty related issues?

Yes of course you can. I had to a few years ago when I owned a Corsa D VXR. The gearbox was making a grinding noise and the dealer I bought it from said it was normal and noise from the diff it had (it was the Nurburg edition with the fancy drexler lsd).

Took it to another dealer down the road and took the master tech out for a test drive. Instantly he said it don't sound right and they swapped the gearbox under warranty after a bit of investigation. They did ask why I hadn't had it done at the dealer I bought it from and I just said because I got fobbed off with it so wanted a second opinion.

I don't get why some dealers try to avoid warranty work, possibly because they don't really make any money on it?

They avoid it because GM will only pay them a unit labour rate they they think is applicable to the repair. For example, to replace an engine they will pay 7 hours max. In reality, it can be done in 7 hours if you have previous experience of doing it day in and day out - if you don't, then it will take significantly longer than they are prepared to rebate, which is why dealers prioritise paying customers over warranty work every day of the week.

With warranty work, The dealer gets the bill until the part is checked and declared faulty unless the field engineer declares he has seen the car and certify's the fault.
